Designated as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, pansori, Korea’s traditional narrative singing art, is renowned for its depth, intensity, and emotional resonance. Even for native Koreans, it often takes decades of rigorous training to achieve "deugeum"—the perfected, resonant voice essential for true mastery. Yet today, this profound art form is crossing borders, inspiring a new generation of international artists.

One of the most remarkable figures is Professor Anna Yates, a German-born pansori practitioner who now serves as an associate professor at the Seoul National University’s Department of Korean Music. Initially trained in Western classical singing, she was captivated by the raw emotional power of pansori and made the bold decision to move to Korea to devote herself to its study.

"I was fascinated by how much emotion and storytelling could be conveyed through a single human voice," she shared, underscoring her enduring passion for the art.

She is not alone. Mapo Laure, originally from France, also found healing and solace through pansori. "Whenever I feel overwhelmed, singing pansori clears my mind," she said, expressing the profound emotional connection she experiences through this Korean tradition. Meanwhile, Choi Eun-ji, a native of Cameroon, explores the depths of Korean sentiment through her mastery of the ajaeng, a traditional bowed zither.

These artists have not merely dabbled in Korean music—they have embraced years of disciplined training and cultural immersion, earning respect as true performers. Described by audiences as evoking "the same awe as witnessing Sumi Jo perform classical music abroad," these foreign pansori practitioners are captivating listeners both in Korea and worldwide.

Pansori is more than an art of sound; it is a living narrative of human experience, handed down through generations. Today, its timeless stories are being carried across borders, woven into the global cultural tapestry.

유네스코가 인류무형문화유산으로 지정한 한국의 전통 예술, 판소리. 수백 년을 이어온 이 독보적인 성악 장르는, 내국인조차 수십 년의 수련을 거쳐야 진정한 '득음(得音)'의 경지에 이를 수 있다. 그러나 놀랍게도, 이제 판소리의 매력은 국경을 넘어 세계 각국의 예술가들을 끌어들이고 있다.

최근 주목받고 있는 인물은 독일 출신의 판소리 이수자이자, 서울대학교 국악과 부교수로 재직 중인 안나 예이츠(Anna Yates) 교수다. 유럽에서 성악을 전공하던 그는, 판소리의 깊은 울림에 매료되어 한국으로 건너와 전통 소리를 온몸으로 익히고 연구하는 삶을 선택했다. 안나 교수는 "어떻게 인간의 목소리로 그렇게 다양한 감정과 이야기를 표현할 수 있을까 하는 의문이 저를 이끌었다"며 판소리에 대한 변함없는 열정을 전했다.
